Paint Like a Pro

Brush Basics

Blend and texture made easy

Start big, then refine

  •  Use three brushes: large flat for backgrounds, middle for shapes, tiny for lines and details.
  • Rinse, gently squeeze, then dab on a towel before switching colors to keep hues crisp.
  • Hold near the ferrule for precision; mid‑handle for looser, expressive strokes.

  • Lay a thin base coat of color over large areas first - watering paints down can help them thinly cover large areas.
  • Save details for the final 20%.
  • Keep paint creamy (a touch of water helps).

  • For smooth backgrounds, use light "X" strokes with a slightly damp brush.
  • Pull strokes in the direction of the subject (horizontal for water/sky; curved for petals).
  • Slowly build up paint in detail areas for added texture.

  •  Mix on the palette edge and “sneak up” on color—add a little at a time.
  • Reserve pure white for final highlights; that last pop makes paintings sing.
  • Muddy area? Let it dry, cover with a thin layer of white, then repaint.

  • Thin paint slightly with water for smooth lines; roll the brush to a point.
  • Anchor your elbow or pinky for control and pull lines toward you.
  • Add final sparkles (tiny highlight dots) and sign small in a corner.

  •  Personalize colors, skin tones, and accents to reflect your style.
  •  Progress over perfection. Step back every few minutes, breathe, and enjoy the process—the masterpiece is the memory you make.

My favorite way to mix: keep adding and moving right

Graceful Greens

Normally you'd start by combining equal parts blue and yellow on your palette – this gives you a basic green. Since our paints include two greens, I started with those. Want a brighter, more lively green? Add more yellow to create a lime or spring green. For deeper, forest-like tones, add a touch more blue, viridian, or even a dab of black. Mix small amounts at a time and blend thoroughly for the best results.

Balanced Browns

We've got a lot of ground to cover :)

Our kit includes Burnt Sienna so I started with that and black. To lighten it up add a little white. Richer brown? Add more Burnt Sienna. Just keep mixing and adding small amounts at a time until you get the color you're looking for.

Breathtaking Blues

Blue is a primary color, but mixing different blues opens up a world of possibilities for stunning skies and realistic water! For bright sky blues, lighten your blue with white – the more white you add, the softer and more cloud-like it becomes. Create tropical turquoise waters by adding a tiny drop of green or yellow to your blue. For dramatic stormy skies or deep ocean scenes, mix in a touch of black or purple for rich, moody blues. Want that perfect sunset sky? Add just a hint of red or pink to create a periwinkle shade.

Ravishing Reds

While red is a primary color that can't be mixed from scratch, you can create stunning red variations perfect for your paint party projects! Start with a pure red as your base. For warm, fiery reds like scarlet or vermillion, add a tiny touch of yellow or orange. Want a sophisticated wine or burgundy? Mix in a small amount of blue or purple. Adding white creates lovely pinks and corals, while a hint of black produces deep maroons.

Polished Purples

Start with equal parts red and blue on your palette – these are your foundation colors. Want a warmer, more vibrant purple? Add a touch more red to create a red-violet. Prefer a cooler, calmer tone? Add extra blue for a blue-violet. The key is to start with small amounts and mix gradually, as acrylics dry quickly and a little paint goes a long way.

Outstanding Oranges

Did someone say sunsets?

Orange is the easiest secondary color to mix and perfect for adding warmth to your paint party creations! Simply combine equal parts red and yellow for a classic orange. Want a bright, cheerful tangerine? Add more yellow to your mix. For rich, autumn-inspired burnt orange, add extra red with just a tiny touch of brown. Create soft peachy tones by mixing in white, perfect for sunsets or florals. The beauty of orange is how forgiving it is – even imperfect mixes create lovely shades!

Pristine Pinks

Getting that petal perfect pink can take some time...it's worth it!

Pink is one of the most beloved colors at paint parties, and it's incredibly easy to mix! Start with white as your base and gradually add small amounts of red until you reach your desired shade – remember, a little red goes a long way! For soft, romantic pinks like blush or rose, use just a drop or two of red. Want a vibrant hot pink? Add more red and try a tiny touch of purple or magenta for extra pop. Create coral pinks by mixing in a hint of orange or yellow for warmth. The key to beautiful pinks is patience – add color slowly and mix thoroughly, as it's much easier to darken than to lighten.
